MUSEUM OPEN FOR VISITORS

Bullhead City, Arizona

The museum opens in September.  It is open Tuesdays thru Sundays. Closed Mondays.  The hours are: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There are two new exhibits:  One is an exhibit of the Rose Massacre which took place within 200 yards of where Fort Mojave was later built.  They were a group of emigrants on their way to California and when they got to the river, the Indians attacked.  Fourteen people lost their lives in that massacre.  Along with the Rose exhibit is one of Sally Fox, a 12 year old girl that sounded the alarm. She received an arrow through her right breast.

The other exhibit is one of Olive Oatman, the white girl that was captured by the Apache Indians and later sold to the Mojaves.  She was later freed and she returned to civilization.

Outside of the museum is a replica of the old Katherine gold mine that was established near Lake Mojave. This mine was an important producer of gold in the area. There is authentic mining paraphernalia surrounding the duplicated mine shaft entrance. Colorado River Historical Society

From the President
As we wrapped up the l998-l999 season, we had blow out figures on: visitors, visitor donations, and sales. It was our very best year to date, and as we enter into the l999-2000 we expect to meet and beat these figures. The primary contributing factor is the expansion of the open hours of the Museum: l0:00 Am - 4:00 PM (closed Mondays). This was a major change from previous years on open hours, and the volunteers who are docents at the Museum must be thanked profusely for their dedication. Another contributing factor is the expansion of our sales department. Come in and see the great gift ideas we have to include: jewelry, books, maps, decorative table pieces, etc. Our books are all local authors. We now have Bullhead City by Roman Malach. This book has been out of print since l978, but thanks to the efforts of Mary Hughes and County Supervisor, James Zaborsky, the book is back in print. We also carry other titles by Mr. Malach such as; Adventurer John Moss, White Hills, and Ghost of McCracken Mine. We have many other books on the history of our area, geography, and geology.

Another reason for our success is the knowledge each docent has on area history. Visitors ask lots of questions, and it is so much fun to talk to them and impart our history of which we are so rich, here in Bullhead City. Bullhead City is a treasure trove of historical places and historical artifacts. We are truly blessed to live here. Just to remind each of you how the Society came to be

The Colorado River Historical Society was formed by a group of people interested in local history, who envisioned a need to preserve all available memorabilia, maps, photographs, journals, and other artifacts to be displayed at some time for future viewing.

Membership became open to all persons interested in the history of the surrounding area, including those parts of California and Nevada where they join with Arizona.

Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month, except closed July and August, at the City Library on Hancock Street. There is always a program and refreshments. Join us and bring guests. We encourage membership.

Virginia Sutherland and Ed Edwards were two of the founding fathers, and they continue to be active in the Society. They are to be congratulated on all the hard work they have accomplished in getting the Society off the ground, as we enter into our 11th year of operation. The Society is young compared to other Societies/Museums. But we keep getting stronger. As we move toward the millennium, the Colorado River Historical Society and Museum anticipates a more active presence in the community.
